Operation will help make little Vigo’s wish come true


BRAVE hearted volunteers are preparing to walk over red-hot coals in their quest to help raise enough money to send a very special little boy to America for a life changing operation. Three-year-old Vigo Koritsas, who lives in Outwood, suffers from cerebral palsy and has already been accepted for the operation called selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR), which could be carried out as soon as April this year at the St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri. But before he can go up to £70,000 must be raised to pay for the one-month trip, operation, follow up treatment and array of equipment needed. Vigo’s condition means the wrong signals are sent to his muscles making them very tight. The procedure in the States will permanently sever the nerves, which send these signals to the muscles, giving him much improved mobility.


As a result of the operation, doctors anticipate that Vigo will have better balance, be able to sit up properly and walk on crutches in all environments. “You do not want to see your children in pain,” explained his mum Natalie. “I am not expecting him to jump out of bed and


run marathons. I just want him to be able to dress himself, sit up and have a bit of independence.


“I was told he would never walk, never run or kick a ball. If he can go to university, have a job, have family and do things other children of his age can do, that would mean the world.”


Now Natalie, together with relatives and friends, have launched a fundraising campaign with the daunting firewalk just one of the stunts on the agenda. It is scheduled for 8pm on Friday, 20 January at The Bell pub in Outwood. Other money raising activities being planned include a charity auction in London, a sky dive, cake sales, bag packing at local supermarkets, a possible golf day, ebay auction and It’s A Knockout competition.


There are also two runners in the London Marathon and £3,500 has been raised through a Facebook campaign. Former councillor receives top award A FORMER


Edenbridge town and Sevenoaks district councillor has been rewarded for his long years of dedication and commitment to the area. Peter Deans was presented with a Civic Medallion by the chairman of the town council Clive Pearman at the chairman’s reception shortly before Christmas. Mr Pearman explained that Mr Deans was born into a Norfolk farming family and moved with his wife Sheila in 1962 to live and manage Gaywood Farm in Edenbridge.


“His sporting interests led to involvement with the new Sports Association at the Lingfield Road ground,” Mr Pearman said. “He committed many years to help guide the expansion of

the association, the re-building of the clubhouse and the extension of the grounds, which are now recognised as some of the best sporting facilities in the area.
