The Artist (PG) 6 Golden Globe nominations – including Best Film France 2011 Dir: Michel Hazanavicius 1hr 40mins silent with English intertitles With: Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo

Winner of the Best Actor Award last year at the Cannes Film Festival, The Artist is a heartfelt and entertaining homage to the silent classics. Set during the twilight of Hollywood’s silent era, the film tells the story of a charismatic movie star, George Valentin (Dujardin), unhappily confronting the new world of talking pictures and the rise of his latest leading lady Peppy Miller (Bejo). Mixing comedy, romance, melodrama and a wink to classics of the silent era, as well as Citizen Kane and Singing in the Rain, The Artist is an original celebration of a black-and-white silent era that lovingly recreates a 1920s Hollywood. The MUST-SEE film of the season, The Artist has dazzled audiences internationally and is set to be one of the main contenders for Best Film in this year’s Oscars.

The Descendants (15) 4 Golden Globe nominations including Best Actor-George Clooney USA 2011 Dir: Alexander Payne 1hr 54mins With: George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Beau Bridges, Judy Greer Matt King (Clooney) looks like a man leading a charmed life. He has a law practice, a wife and family, and is the trustee of a large family plot of land. But when his thrill-seeking wife Elizabeth suffers a boating accident, he’s faced with a massive wake-up call. Matt, the ‘back-up parent’, realises he barely knows his daughters, ten-year-old Scottie and 17-year-old Alexandra, and has little idea how to cope with or care for them while his wife lies locked in a coma. Added to this, he learns that Elizabeth too has been keeping secrets from him and is something of a mystery. While the subject is serious, director Alexander Payne (Sideways) manages to use a light, deft touch, acutely observing the contradictions of life and emotion with biting humour.
