Carnage (15)
2 Golden Globe Nominations – including Best Actress - Jodie Foster & Kate Winslet
France/Germany/Spain 2011 Dir: Roman Polanski 1hr 19mins With: Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz
Adapted by award-winning director Roman Polanski (The Pianist) and playwright Yasmina Reza from her own Tony award-winning play The God of Carnage, this new film is a brilliantly sustained one-scene comic drama which exposes the hypocrisy, double- thinking and charmlessness of the modern bourgeoisie. Two boys fight in a local playground. Swollen lips, broken teeth…Now the parents of the ‘victim’ have invited the parents of the ‘bully’ to their home to resolve their issues. Cordial banter gradually develops a razor-sharp edge as all four parents reveal their laughable contradictions and grotesque prejudices. None of them will escape the ensuing carnage…
“The film barely puts a foot wrong. The acting comes at full throttle” THE GUARDIAN

A Dangerous Method (15) France/Ireland/UK/Germany/Canada 2011 Dir: David Cronenberg 1hr 39min With: Viggo Mortensen, Keira Knightley, Michael Fassbender, Vincent Cassel
Set in Vienna on the eve of the First World War, the film explores the complex relationship between novice psychiatrist Carl Jung (Fassbender) and his mentor Sigmund Freud (Mortensen). Studying under the already well-established Freud, Jung practices his teacher’s methods while developing his own theories based on the clinical study of psy chologically disturbed patients. When a Sabina Spielrein (Knightley), a sick young Russian woman, arrives at the clinic, both Jung and Freud are fascinated by her case and spellbound by her vulnerable yet dangerous sexuality. Adapted by and based on the play by Christopher Hampton, A Dangerous Method is a provocative story of historical fiction, buoyed by brilliant performances from its leads.
