Midwest economic survey suggests further

slowdown OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Little

economic growth is expected over the next several months in nine Midwest and Plains states because problems in the global economy are slowing business in the region, according to a new survey released Jan. 3.

The region’s economy still ap-

pears much healthier than it did during the recession of 2008 and 2009, but the debt concerns in Europe and sluggish pace of the nation’s economy are causing a slowdown, Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said. The overall index in the sur-

vey of business leaders and sup- ply managers slipped to a neutral score of 50 in December from 52.6 in November. The survey uses a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Goss said that any score above 50 suggests growth while a score below 50 suggests decline for that factor. North Dakota’s overall index

slipped to 55.6 in December from 57.9 in November. Goss predicts a 2012 job growth

of 3.4 percent in North Dakota and a 5.7 percent increase of its infl a- tion-adjusted GDP.

Weekly US oil and gas rig count unchanged

HOUSTON (AP) — The number of rigs actively

exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. remained unchanged last week, holding at 2,007. Houston-based drilling product provider Baker

Hughes Inc. reported Jan. 6 that 1,191 rigs were explor- ing for oil and 811 for natural gas. Five were listed as miscellaneous. A year ago Baker Hughes reported 1,700 active rigs. Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas gained 10 rigs, Arkansas gained two and Louisiana gained one. Alaska, California and Oklahoma each lost three rigs

and North Dakota, Pennsylvania and Wyoming each lost one. Colorado, New Mexico and West Virginia were unchanged. The rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981. A low of 488 was recorded in 1999.
