PHS Wrestlers Place Fifth at Winnisquam Invitational

Tom Gleason of Pelham takes an 11-9 win by decision over his Manchester West opponent Edgar Hernandez
submitted by Marc Ayotte with Coach Bob Riddinger The Pelham wrestling team participated in the
Winnisquam Invitational on Saturday, January 7. The Pythons had a nice showing, placing fifth out of 13 teams with 84 points; finishing behind the Timberlane “B” team 170, Plymouth 131, Pinkerton “B” 116, and John Stark 98. Pelham had five place winners. With first place finishes for Pelham were Josh Medeiros at 120 pounds, going 3-0 on the day and Kevin DeAngelo at 138 pounds going 4-0 on the day. Earning second place finishes were Jared Boyden at 106 pounds finishing 2-1 and Tom Gleason at 182 pounds also going 2-1. Rounding out the scorers was Muhanned Bagegni at 152 pounds finishing with a 4-1 mark on the day. Bagegni was forced to forfeit out his chance for a third place finish due to the National Federation’s five match rule, not allowing wrestlers to compete in more than five matches per day. Boyden started with a bye in the number one seed, then pinned Ryley Cook of Newport in :27 seconds. His day ended when Tyler Fitzpatrick of Timberlane pinned him at the 1:33 mark of the second period. At the time Boyden was down 6-4. Josh Medeiros, also in the number one seed,
started with a bye then defeated Ethan Shaw of Timberlane in a hard fought 10-5 decision. Medeiros met Codi Gaudreau of John Stark in the finals. After going up 6-2 on his opponent, Medeiros pinned Gaudreau at the 1:54 mark of the second period. The next Pelham wrestler in the finals was Kevin DeAngelo. Kevin opened his day with a pin of Anthony Giroux of Concord in 1:14 seconds. He next faced a rematch with his Oyster River counterpart, Caleb Cole. DeAngelo lost earlier in the season to Cole, getting pinned in the third period. The Python 138 pounder was wrestling with a broken wrist at the time and would exact revenge today. Leading 8-4 in the third period, Kevin turned Cole with a cradle and scored the pin at 1:10 seconds of the third. Next up was Josh Lydick of Pinkerton. Wrestling a tight match, DeAngelo controlled the bout, taking a sound 6-0 decision. In the finals he faced Brian Lonergren of Timberlane. Again with a strong 4-1 lead going into the third, the frustrated Owl wrestler was assessed

the championships for the day. Tom opened his day with a decisive pin of Caleb Welch of John Stark at the :51 second mark of the second period. Next on the docket for Gleason was divisional opponent Chase Wyman of Plymouth. Gleason opened up a 7-0 lead before pinning his man at 1:21 of the second period. In the finals, Gleason found himself against last year’s state champ, Eddie O’Malley from Newfound. Gleason lost earlier this year to O’Malley early in the first period. Gleason battled him tougher this day; down 4-0 before O’Malley put him away with a pin at the :44 second mark of the second period. In all, eight wrestlers started the day for Pelham with five coming home with medals. Pelham will play host to their Daniel Gionet Memorial Tournament this Saturday, January 14, in the PHS gymnasium. The event will feature 16 schools from Rhode Island, Massachusetts

and New Hampshire. The tournament was renamed after Gionet, a former Pelham graduate and wrestler who was killed in Iraq serving his country. The Pelham wrestling team would like to invite everyone to come down and enjoy a great day of wrestling. Tickets can be purchased at the door at the cost of $3 for adults and $2 for students and seniors.
Earlier in the week, the Pythons hosted
Manchester West in the Snake Pit. Although the Blue Knights rode off with a slim 42-38 win in the team scoring, the Pythons saw fine performances from several wrestlers. Picking up wins for Pelham were Muhanned Bagegni with a technical fall, Tom Gleason with an 11-9 decision, Jared Boyden with an impressive :17 pin in the 106 weight class and Kevin DeAngelo who walked off with a pin win 34 seconds into the second period while leading 4-2 at the time.
