From Salford
College Highlights 2010-2011
At the beginning of the 2010-2011 academic year, the decision was made to replace the four faculties at Salford with three colleges. In August 2011 the School of Humanities, Languages & Social Sciences was created.
College of Arts & Social Sciences Salford Law School
This year was the first year the School had been evaluated by students in the National Students’ Survey, and the results were fantastic. It was ranked in the top 10 in the country for Law and was placed behind only Manchester and Lancaster Universities in the North West in the Guardian’s League Table.
In June 2010, the School ran its ‘Sixth Form Law Conference’, where students from local schools and colleges come to hear about life as a lawyer and as a law student. This was the fifth time the conference has been run at Salford; and since 2006 over 1,000 students from over 30 institutions have attended the event.
School of Art & Design Staff on the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course have worked with professionals in the design industry, design graduates and academia from other North West colleges and universities to create the Designers Northern Alliance (DNA). This has been very successful in bringing design professionals and students together to share their expertise at various events in the North West.
For the second year running, the BA (Hons) Fashion course has won the very prestigious Portfolio Award from the British Fashion Council. It has also held its first individual catwalk show at Graduate Fashion Week at Earls Court, London – the premier student fashion event in the country – and the judging panel felt Salford’s entry demonstrated the best overall presentation of students’ work.
Over the last year, the School has successfully set up satellite “Pocket Galleries” in order to showcase the work of the students within the

School to the general public. The ‘HUB’ and the ‘HIVE’ in the city centre and ‘Create@ Salford’ in the Lowry shopping centre utilise empty shop units and have hosted a wide range of exhibitions, interactive projects and outreach activities – all of which have engaged the local population in entertaining, thoughtful and successful ways.
Salford Business School
The Business School has been working with the School of Nursing and the North West Alliance to deliver a pioneering leadership programme across 24 Community Health Services in the NHS to 80 managers and clinicians. The programme was based on the NHS Leadership Qualities Framework and was recognised by the Institute of Leadership and Management, and
Salford was chosen as the preferred educational partner out of over 200 other institutions. This year saw the first cohort of students to the MSc in Islamic Banking and Finance, establishing Salford Business School as one of the leading providers of specific qualifications for the Islamic Banking and Finance sector. Due to the success of this, discussions are now going ahead regarding the establishment of a Centre for Islamic Finance and Business Development within Salford Business School.
