This session will address recent developments in the law related to paid and unpaid internships, in particular the application of the Fair Labor Standards Act. The session is designed to provide guidance and practical solutions to both park district officials and to educators to ensure that internship programs comply with the law. We will also address important legal issues facing park district officials with regard to hiring independent contractors. The speakers will be available to address other legal issues related to park district employees.


Learning Outcomes: Participants will: (1) understand the


application of Fair Labor Standards Act regulations to park district interns and criteria that must be met to except interns from FLSA regulations; (2) understand the necessary components of an internship program that are critical to legal compliance.
