revel in physical activity, balancing the social with the solitary work of the shop. Andy is a rock guide, cer- tified to take small groups out on one-day climbs. He began climbing “obsessively” in 2000 and now does guiding through Earthworks Climb- ing School. Bouldering̶scaling smaller rocks̶is his specialty, but he reports having “spent a lot of time on large walls in Yosemite.” Like his brother, Andy views his pursuits with an artist’s eye. Climb- ing, he says, is a “dance on rock, de- veloping your reflexes and balance. So much of climbing is learning the language of your body.”


Andy’s other art is poetry, which he’s been writing since he took an intensive tutorial with teacher-poet Paul Willis at Westmont College. After college, Andy got a job as the arts editor for an online magazine. “It’s all working muscle,” he says. His poems tend to be meditations on people and nature. “It’s the rich- est way I’ve experienced the world,” he says.


After Dan’s return from his studies in Austria, the brothers took up hammer and tongs with renewed zeal. Dan’s business plan for Santa Barbara Iron and Forge is to produce a high-end line that can take on volume, eventually moving to a retail presence with catalogs and brochures. “Workman- ship and creativity̶with no corner cutting̶are harder to find,” he says. “I believe there’s a place out there for excellence because I care about that.” 
