warm soapy water is used to get rid of any machine oils left on the plastic. Pre- assembled electronics are taken apart and reassembled to each lamp’s design, for example, having a dimmer switch. Inserted between the circular
plastic pieces and locked down with tiny Allen screws is a Giclée fine art print precision cut for each lamp. The Giclée prints designed for the lamps are printed in the Hawthorne’s Foothill Road studio workshop using fade resistant archival (100 years) vegetable dye inks on fine art papers or transpar- ency films. “The images we use in the lamps now
are of my photography,” says Scott, who has been taking pictures since he was 9 and also is a traditional pen and ink illustrator. “We are developing images for specific customer requirements.” Additionally, the gallery will have
four abstract art images of Ken Means Designs. The environmentally responsible
LED bulbs are inserted to complete the assembly process. The life of the bulb is tested at 10 years, and they release no UV rays, which helps prevent fading. Scott describes the bulbs as “the best
part.” In addition to the above, they emit no heat, are 5,000 Kelvin (mimick- ing daylight), have no harmful products such as mercury used in their produc- tion, and are color balanced. “For an old school photography nerd
like me,” Hawthorne says, “that’s really important.” (Important enough to use bulbs that sell for about $200 each.) Candy prefers to describe her hus-
band as a “digital art pioneer.” She adds, “Most computer artwork stays in the computer. It’s nice to have a venue for it.” The Fine Art Lamps retail at Hol-
land Scott Gallery, as of press time they weren’t available anywhere else, from $499 to $1,200. The Hawthornes estimate a couple of hundred Fine Art Lamps are sold each year. ¢
