Council commits additional

funding for low income programs

BY SARA MONGE news@coastalview.com

The Carpinteria City Council again proved its dedication to those suffer- ing from the financial cri- sis by voting unanimous- ly not only to approve a $19,571 grant for services to low-income families, but also to add another $6,500 to the total. Since 2006, Carpinteria

has received funding from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development in the form of a Community Devel- opment Block Grant. At its March 23 meeting, the council approved grants to four local charities, The City of Santa Bar- bara’s Rental Housing Mediation Task Force, the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club Daycare Program, People’s Self-Help Hous- ing’s Youth Enhancement Program and it’s Housing the Homeless project. After some discussion

“I find it odd … that when the economy is strong we give out more money to

social services programs, and when the economy is in deep recession, we pull back … I think that’s the wrong

about what each of the or- ganizations would add to the community, Councilman Joe Armendariz surprised his fellow councilmembers by asking them to consider giving an extra $6,500 out of Carpinteria’s General Fund in order to make up some of the difference between what the organizations asked for and what they are being given. To explain his suggestion he said, “I find it odd … that when the economy is strong we give out more money to social services programs, and when the economy is in deep recession, we pull back … I think that’s the wrong approach.” Council support for Armendariz’s suggestion was quick, with both Councilwoman Kathleen Reddington and Vice-Mayor Al Clark seconding the idea simultane- ously. Councilman Brad Stein joked with Armendariz saying, “We’re all in shock and awe!”

approach.” —Councilman Armendariz

The City of Santa Barbara’s Rental Housing Mediation

Task Force helps people stay in their rentals by dissemi- nating information and mediating between renters and tenants. Because so many people are having difficulty staying in their homes as they lose jobs, the council was adamant that this was an important cause. The Boys & Girls Club’s Daycare Program provides

affordable daycare and education programs to low-in- come families. The program has recently added com- puter and reading rooms for older children to benefit from and also offers fieldtrips to local sites such as the seal rookery in order to make children feel connected to the community.

And they’re off! From left front, Aisha Duarte and Jaylynn Robinson look to win with a front- running strategy in the 1-mile Fun Run at the 17th

annual Orchard to Ocean Run on March 21.

Hundreds of participants flocked to Carpinteria for the popular event, and the clouds dried up just enough for racers to remain dry. The Carpinteria Education Foundation, organizer of the event, raised more money this year than in 2008, a remarkable accomplishment that will directly benefit each school in the district.

A tale of two bags Carpinteria Beautiful launches reusable bag program

BY LEA BOYD lea@coastalview.com Once a hero to shoppers, the plastic

grocery bag has proved, in its 30-year history, to be a large-scale villain to the environment. Some of the same properties that make it so good at its food-toting job have caused massive destruction to wildlife around the planet. Lightweight but sturdy, the bag carries groceries like a pro and then goes on to wreak havoc on the environ- ment for thousands of years, taking up space in landfills, blowing out to sea, strangling and suffocating birds and marine wildlife and breaking down into toxic bits that work their way up the food chain. The problem is massive, and Carpinteria Beautiful has decided to do something about it. This spring, the local organization has launched the “It’s in the Bag: A Clean, Healthy World” program, which will increase awareness about the global
