If Spiegle’s career was drawn onto the pages of a comic book, the first panel would depict the 29-year-old, aspiring artist on the sidewalk outside a Hollywood office in the fall of 1949. Bubbly renditions of old Buicks race down the boulevard. an angry looking Studebaker wooshes by and the wind scatters the contents of the young artist’s scrapbook, the only portfolio he has, onto the ground. Spiegle as a comic book hero, would befit his own taste—the odds were stacked against him.

Spiegle needed work. With G.I. Bill funds running low, the newly married artist wanted an original Western comic strip he had been working on published in a newspaper but was unsure how to make it happen. on a tip from an art school buddy, he entered the office of Capitol Records to follow up on a listing for a cartoonist/writer. Inside the office was bad news. The job was drawing “Bozo the Clown,” a style of drawing with which the young artist had no experi- ence. “I told them, ‘I’m not a real cartoonist,’” says Spiegle. His strips consisted of realistic representations of cowboys, horses, saloons and trains of the old west.
Desperate to get a referral, the young artist showed his Western drawings, and the man at Capitol said he might want to try his luck a couple of blocks away at the office of William Boyd, the actor famous for playing Hopalong Cassidy in scores of movies in the 1930s and
