73 season on the sand

Cerca del Mar, one of California’s exclusive beach clubs, made its home in Carpinteria in the early part of the last century. Its grand opening in 1928 caused much fanfare and made the society pages regularly. Bad times and worse luck followed and decided the future of Cerca del Mar, which served as barracks for military during World War II and later housing for state park personnel.

It’s truly inspirational what a community can do with hard work and determination. Once there was a little neglected spot owned by the county. It was a road yard, an artists’ colony during the ’60s and ’70s, and a road yard again. Now, after a lot of sweat and perseverance from a variety of organizations, the year-round wildlife corridor and gathering point for the back country trails are known as the Greenwell Preserve.
