In your hand is the most current book on Carpinteria by the sea. I write this letter only twice a year and looking back to the last issue, into the change of the season and a brand new year ahead, I find that the challenges always come with a silver lining in this beautiful town. Carpinteria is the best community in my book.
When I asked a local skywatcher, who helped host
the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s first telescope, “Where is the closest observatory?” He casually answered, “My backyard.” Ed Edwards, star struck since age 7, starts our story for the winter issue.
When I asked a favorite retail soap king who he regarded as the most interesting local woman for an interview. On the spot, he nominated, “America’s gracious and famous soap star queen and ingénue of the ‘Towering Inferno.’” In this issue’s Q&A, there’s some hands-on celebrity talk. Susan Flannery reviews Hollywood, the Carpinteria hillside, and how well Shepard Mesa fits her views.
It wasn’t necessary to ask about this next local icon. World famous matador, writer, easy going fame, and brilliant star on any galaxy of creative endeavor, Barnaby Conrad channels every decade. One of the most charming, understated men I have ever met. Read his books and hear a real voice.
The above three stars are just the start.
Remember when citizens energized the incorporation of the City of Carpinteria 45 years ago? Read the sweet story of the alpacas and their home in the Valley’s front country. Find yourself a restful place to park ... breathe deep, take in the big sky.
The shimmering glow of this community is an amazing picture any day. Live here. Visit here. It’s the gem of the coastline.
