on the beach is from Carpinteria’s asphaltum, a natural asphalt


factory centered on Tar Pits beach, between Carpinteria State Park and the Casitas Pier. Mined for centuries, the seeping asphalt was once used to waterproof Chumash canoes and to pave Santa Barbara County’s first roads. Sheltered in a cove, at low tide Tar Pits Beach tide pools offer a live laboratory in marine life. Above the beach on a bluff sits Tar Pits Park. Trails, native vegetation


and unparalleled views of the Pacific are the trademarks of Tar Pits Park. Other than a pristine setting and opportunity to see a variety of birds and animals, there are no facilities at the park. None are needed.


bluffs nature park Not only is Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Park one of California’s


most scenic coastal spots, it is a testament to the strong will and


determination of the townspeople who purchased the land to call their own, staving off development. Biking, hiking, picnicking, bird watching and dog walking are some of the activities enjoyed on the 52-acre natural park land. You decide which view is more spectacular: a pink moment in the Santa Ynez Mountains or the Channel Islands rising out of the cobalt blue Pacific. Access Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Park through the parking lot at the foot of Bailard Avenue.
