beneAth your muG. A stream of coffee runs down the mug onto the patterned surface of the white doily, causing a brown smear. You get up to leave, and the person
asks, “Can I have that?” “Have what?”
“The doily. It is beautiful.” Collage and assemblage artists stroll around a mundane room wearing their artist’s goggles. They revive the cast- offs of daily life. Candy wrappers escape the rubbish bin, because the crinkled plastic will serve as a frilly fish scale in the scheme of the artist’s latest creation. Two variations in the medium of applying found objects as material for works of art, collage and assemblage differ only in dimen- sions.
