it. (Their older daughter Jocelyn, 22, lives in Colorado and couldn’t make it out for the fence project.) Kathy explained that she wanted to get the kids involved because she hopes to one day pass the beach houses on to them. “We’re doing [this] for them. This is a long-term


commitment for us ... We want our grandchildren to stay here. We felt like it belonged to all of us. We wanted [Jake and Ivy] to be able to tell their kids, ‘I built that fence,’” says Kathy. Describing the process for renting out Dorrance House, she talks about how their lives have come full circle. While looking for long-term tenants, Jed and Kathy met a young couple who had just moved to


the area. The two people reminded Kathy of herself and Jed two decades earlier. Like the couple, Jed and Kathy found a cute beach shack in the area that they wanted to move to and were thrilled when the land- lords allowed them to rent the space. So, the Hirsches gave the couple the green light and soon afterwards their lives took a new turn.


“A few days after they moved in, he proposed and that’s when Jed proposed,” says Kathy. And if life is anything like a fairy tale, the couple,


along with the Hirsch family and their new homes, will live happily ever after. Truly a Carpinteria love story.¢
