PAGE 4 From the Chapter President

Happy New Year. Ok, it's here...2012. How will it change what you do other than changing the year on the dateline when you write a check? Are you ready to make some resolutions? Are you looking forward to months and months of bilge-water ads (oops, I mean political ads) on television? Are you looking forward to see if the "dooms-day crew," who think the world will end in 2012, are correct? How will you use the new year for the greatest good for all? Are you making resolu- tions?

Dang, I sure ask a lot of questions. Some worthwhile and thought provoking...others are just a waste of time contemplating. What is it about the "New Year" that causes us to want to make changes? We know we have the opportunity to change anytime we want. Why do we say on January 1, I will change to do—fill in the blank? Why don't we say, "On February 4, I will change to do—fill in the blank?"

It seems like the end of the calendar year is where we seem to make changes. That is kind of unusual seeing how the church liturgical calendar starts in Advent. Wonder why that is...but I digress. Whether or not you make resolutions is up to you. I hope you have set yourself some attainable goals. Here is a list of my past resolutions and the one I have set for 2012:

2008: I will get my weight down below 240 pounds. 2009: I will follow my new diet religiously until I get below 260 pounds. 2010: I will develop a realistic attitude about my weight. 2011: I will work out 3 days a week. 2012: I will try to drive past a gym at least once a week.

I hope you have set yourself some attainable goals.

Goals are an important part of planning for you and your choir. I hope one of your goals this year will be to get yourself to our summer workshop. We have the best price in the area for a week of fun-filled education, and we have a central location. It saves both time and money. We know how financially tight budgets are in churches at the moment.

We have a special day for Pastors this year. Bring them and you can show them how much fun we have learn- ing what we do...it also will help show them what we as church musicians do to try to plan for the year and that we don't just "show up" and throw things together. Joan has done a fantastic job putting this workshop together. Registration is open. Please take time to register today and save yourself some money. Early regis- tration is earlier than usual. Don't miss the deadline for the money-saving deal.

This will be my 35th workshop in a row. I always put it on my calendar first when I get a new one. Why? Fellowship! Life-long caring and loving friends, musicians, mentors, people with ideas to draw from. Come join us in Lakeland this summer.
