As the nation commemorates the 150th anniversaries of the Civil War and Emancipation, Richmond is a must visit destination. The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar is the first museum of its kind to explore the war through three interwoven perspectives (Union, Confederate and African American). The Museum and White House of the Confederacy and Richmond National Battlefield Park also are dedicat- ed to Civil War history and will offer com- memorate exhibits and events.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Richmond's James River was recently named by USA Today as one of the Top 10 Places for Paddling - In a City. It is the only urban setting with Class III and IV rapids.

The Comfort Suites at Ridgewood Farms completed a million dollar renovation in the spring. The hotel now has a very con- temporary decor. Meeting spaces were completely renovated, as well.
The Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center, a DoubleTree hotel, recently com- pleted a renovation to its open air Garden Courtyard. The hotel is home to 331 guest rooms and offers 63,000-square feet of flexible meeting space in its IACC- approved conference center. The court- yard features seating for up to 250 guests, a focal point gazebo, as well as a designated lounge area.
The newly designed Sheraton Roanoke Hotel and Conference Center offers 320 guest rooms, 17,000-square feet of flexi- ble meeting space within ultra-modern, upscale decor. Offering convenient access to the Link@Sheraton Internet Lounge and hot spot, and Shula's 347
Grill Restaurant on site, the hotel is a popular location for meetings and events.
Primland, located in Meadows of Dan, offers an extraordinary sporting retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The resort has added treasure hunts and mountain bik- ing and hiking to the arrows in its quiver of activity options while also creating the option for guests to stay in its new tree house, situated 2,000 feet over the Dan River Gorge. The Golden Eagle Tree House adds to the accommodation spectrum at Primland, a structure located adjacent to the fourth green of The Highland Course, which opened in August.
Comfort Inn Troutville/Roanoke recently completed an extensive renovation to all guest rooms. A new elevator also was installed, and a large breakfast room was added.
Last fall, the city of Roanoke began an exciting renovation of one of its most "historic and iconic structures," the City Market Building. The $7.1 million project was completed this past summer.
Local Roots is a farm-to-table restaurant in Roanoke that works with local farmers for organic, sustainably produced veg- etables, fruits and animal products that have been harvested from three gardens that make up the restaurant's city farm. A high tunnel was recently added to allow the restaurant to grow cool weather veg- etables during the winter.
PLACES TO MEET
The Commonwealth of Virginia's Official Transportation Museum offers a very unique meeting space. Here, groups can explore the N&W Class A 1218 and Class J 611 historic steam and diesel engines, cabooses, and other rail equipment. The museum can accommodate parties and meetings for up to 1,000 people. The auto and aviation galleries are located indoors, while the rail yard is outside.

The Jefferson Center operated as Roanoke's principal public high school from 1923 to 1974, and today is a non- profit organization that produces high quality performing and visual arts pro- grams, attracting approximately 100,000 patrons a year.
