Why is NYHS the
best kept secret? A Message from
Dear Friends of NYHS,
Deanne Etsekson
2011-2012 NYHS President
I wish I could tell you how many times, over the past several years, that I have been asked by parents and supporters of our school: “why is NYHS the best kept secret in Seattle?” As the parent of two alumni and one current student, I fully understand their frustration. More often than not, when I have said that my kids attend NYHS, I have been met with blank stares from many community members.

I am puzzled by this lack of knowledge. After all, NYHS is the only Jewish high school in Seattle. We have students who are National Merit Commended Scholars, Jewish scholars, State and Nationally ranked athletes and most importantly all around great kids! Our students are consistently accepted to their top choice universities and yeshivot in Israel and in the United States.
Nearly one hundred percent of our alumni graduate from colleges and universities. Over sixty percent attend yeshivot and seminaries in Israel. We have alumni who are successful actors, financial experts, business people, Rabbis, lawyers, doctors and educators. They are raising Jewish families of their own and contribute to our society in both the Jewish and secular arenas.
To address this issue, I am happy to share with you that our school community has decided to take on ground- breaking communication initiatives this year. Our administrators, faculty and staff are implementing innovative ways to communicate with students and parents. Our board is doing their part by working with our new communications task force to educate us on ways to help our community gain knowledge about the “best kept secret in Seattle”. And through the vision of our beneficiary agencies the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and the Samis Foundation we are working with our partner schools to realize our collective dream of increased funding and enrollment for all of our Jewish schools.
NYHS has been educating our high school students since 1974. It’s what we do best and it’s what we will continue doing. We are proud of our students and of our alumni. Our enrollment is up from last year and our families are more engaged than ever. Our kids deserve more than blank stares. They know that they are the future of our Jewish Community. I invite you to come to the school and meet our students for yourself. Take a look at our website. Read our weekly newsletter or “Thoughts on the Parasha”. And next time someone asks if you know about NYHS, join me and answer in the affirmative: “Yes, I’m a friend!”
