Rabbi Benjy Owen Dean of Torah Studies

Our faculty seek to instill in our students a love of learning , Torah, a commitment to excellence, a passion for serving the community and love for Israel. Independent Torah learning was a major focus of the past year. A number of seniors gave Shabbat sermons and Seudah Shelisheit divrei Torah in many of our local synagogues. Students in the upper levels worked in pairs (chavruta) to research, translate and analyze relevant texts and to prepare presentations about various big contemporary halachic (Jewish Law) questions. Topics included the mitzvah to live in the Land of Israel, Shabbat on a cruise ship, the requirement of the second day of Yom Tov for Americans visiting Israel, microphone use on Shabbat, henna tattoos and slacks for women. We were honored to welcome Rabbi Moshe Kletenik of Bikur Cholim-Machzikay Hadath and former President of the Rabbinical Council of America to hear many of these presentations. Rabbi Kletenik discussed the findings and offered his own insight on each topic. Thank you to The Samis Foundation, Iris and Steve Schwartz, Hewlett Packard and Dell for donating the technology hardware and software that assisted the students in preparing these projects.

This past year, over a dozen American and Israeli Yeshivot and Seminaries visited NYHS to recruit our students. Israel Consul General Akiva Tor spoke at NYHS about the importance of studying in Israel and connecting with the country by living there. We are very pleased that 12 of our 16 graduates are studying in Israel this year.

We have another year of meaningful learning ahead of us.
