FESTIVAL GUIDE

COMPILED AND WRITTEN BY PAUL RILEY Quality in quantity

Once again this summer, the BBC Music Magazine team will scatter across the country to explore all corners of Britain’s incomparable festival season. In many towns where the music scene potters along for most of the year, it’s great to see them go all out for a week or so in a celebration of their local heroes, often

performed by international stars. Elgar’s Gerontius in Worcester Cathedral performed by the Philharmonia, for instance, is a tremendous case in point. We also get the chance to hear great artists on their home turf: Alison Balsom in Winchester, or even Peter Maxwell Davies in Orkney. And let’s not forget the buildings that briefl y become our concert halls, from beautiful churches and cathedrals to magnifi cent civic rooms – and even sports halls. We hope to see you at one of them! Oliver Condy
