ATTRACTIONS Life in the slow lane.
A visit to Sugarcreek or “The Little Switzerland of Ohio” will demonstrate why this is the one of the largest Amish settlements in the world. The rolling hills, extra wide roads to accommodate the buggies, and the neatly organized fields of drying hay remind you of a trip back to Switzerland. It is quite com- mon to see horse and buggies traveling through the down- town, which is home to bulk food stores, craft and quilt stores and several restaurants featuring Swiss, German and Amish specialties.

The tranquil, peaceful area will tell you a story at the Alpine Hills Historical Museum which includes three floors of this area’s history and heritage. The John S. Yoder Home will offer you a glimpse into Amish life during the 1800s and today… unchanged by society. You can take a narrated horse-drawn trolley ride through the downtown or walk the leisurely pace of a pedestrian in this quaint village.
While you’re here, stop at the office of The Budget, a
weekly Amish newspaper published in Sugarcreek since 1890 and internationally distributed. This newspaper offers letters from the Amish and Mennonite communities across the U.S. and around the world with inside information on the weather, agricultural progress and livestock conditions.
A complete list of all museums, along with address and phone numbers is listed on pages 8-13.
