NJLiveHealthy.com SUBSCRIPTIONS I
am a little old to be out trick or treating, although my beard is a good start to a costume. I’ll leave the full costumes and the candy to my three grandkids, ages 9, 11, and 13. I won’t be handing out candy either, as I
live out in the country too far for costumed youngsters to trek. My 11 acres in the country is an organic farmette in progress. I will keep you updated on how that is going. This year, the deer got the best of the organic veggies. This month, I adopt- ed two black labs in desperate need of exercise who will hopefully be able to run fast enough to deter the veggie-munching deer by next year. I feel that I had my trick and treat experience earlier this year. First, I discov-
ered Natural Awakenings and fell in love. Then I got excited about the franchise opportunity and filled out the application. I set an appointment to talk with the co-founder, John Voel. We had a great talk, and then John said, “What about Ala- bama?” I told him I am permanently located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, having retired there from 3.5 careers. John said, “Hunterdon is not available.” I felt tricked. Then bummed.
Not to be daunted, I sent an email to publishers Mary Piirsalu and Stepha-
nie Abrusia with an offer to help or invest. Mary said, “Let’s talk.” Then the treat began. It truly has been a wonderful treat to meet Mary and Stephanie and to be extended the honor of purchasing their franchise. Now I are a publisher, so it’s a good thing Julie Peterson is staying on as editor. In fact, the entire publishing team that brought you three strong years of Natural Awakenings is staying in place, including Mary and Stephanie in very significant, but reduced roles. This issue includes a trick for you. While New Jersey residents are flood wea-
ry, we will ironically be discussing the world’s water shortage issues. It’s a huge problem and we need to be prepared to take serious steps in solving the crisis. There are treats galore in this issue. Check out Green Kids and Green Businesses, and Aligning for Fitness. Looking toward the future, this fantastic publishing team will continue treat-
ing you, our readers, for a long time. May God Bless,
