Your Portfolio

Your portfolio should contain a well-presented selection of your work. Do take advice on this from your tutors but please remember that we want to see a range of work that reflects your overall experience of art and design practice, but also include work that supports your chosen area of specialism.

Of particular interest to our staff is the process you have undertaken, so please include work that shows the ‘journey’ undertaken, not just final pieces. The best portfolios take time to plan and prepare, they cannot be completed the night before the interview! Consider what will work best for you and your work. Consider the structure, content, order, layout, etc...

Within your portfolio we will be looking for worksheets, ideas sheets, storyboards, samples as well as finished pieces, sketchbooks and notebooks that document your visual interest and thinking. In short we are looking for evidence of:

– Creativity and drawing – Practical skills – Research skills – An open-minded, enquiring and experimental approach to practical work

– Your visual communication skills – The ability to develop ideas

A good interview matters…

Interviews are an opportunity for you to fill in the gaps: to explain, to illustrate, to demonstrate, to highlight strengths and present your application holistically. We are genuinely interested in you and your work.

A good interview matters…try to communicate your overall commitment and enthusiasm for your chosen subject area. What you say and how you say it can make a real difference. A positive dialogue can really influence the decision of the interviewer.

We will be looking for evidence of:

– Creativity – Intellectual ability – Enthusiasm, self-motivation and dedication – The ability to learn independently – An interest in the wider horizons of contemporary art and design and media

– Awareness of, and interest in, your chosen pathway practices

– Your verbal and written communication skills
