Committee Chairman Pat Hargreaves , center, makes a point as members Don Freeman, left, and Rick Russell, right, look on. by Jay Hobson
Last week, the Solid Waste Committee reviewed the number of eligible properties in light of a possible vote at town meeting that could institute curbside trash and recyclable pick-up. The numbers were revised upward. Present at the meeting which was held in the break room of the Department of Public Works (DPW) site on Cluff Road were Selectman Pat Hargreaves, Chairman of the committee, Rick Russell, DPW Director and Vice Chairman, committee members and residents Donald Freeman, William Arivella, Ronald Wells, David Kincman and Richard Cooney. Representatives from E.L. Harvey & Sons, Inc. were Vice President of Sales and Marketing Brian Alexson and Municipal Marketing Manager Katie Hare. The proposed bid from Harvey was for 8,300 properties, excluding high rise apartment buildings and commercial sites, making the curbside pick-up available for non-commercial residential properties only.

Upon further review of town property listings taken from the assessor’s office zoning data, an additional 383 properties that include properties at Town Village Road, 241 Main St., townhouses on Brookdale Road, Sullivan Court, and some private trailer parks were added to the 8,300 number, increasing the total properties eligible to 8,683.
Excluded residences included the Tiffany Road apartments/ condos, the Campbell apartment buildings behind Lowes, and other commercial apartment and condo buildings. “The commercial properties aren’t included because they are zoned commercial not residential, have current contracts with haulers and the dumpsters are not divided into recyclables and trash,” committee member Donald Freeman said. The committee’s findings and proposals will be presented to the board of selectmen on January 16.
