WHEN you contact Samaritans what ever you say goes no further. If you face a problem and you don’t have anyone to share what is on your mind think about picking up the phone, emailing or calling in to meet us. It helps to talk something through. Problems and issues can take you by surprise, or they can build over time either way they can become a burden which really weighs you down. Samaritans recognize that some problems are sometimes very difficult to think about let alone to talk through with a complete stranger. That’s why we are friendly and also careful to not judge what people tell us. We also recognize

that if you are young you might be facing something for the first time, and that
something could be anything; family problems such as divorce, abuse or alcoholism, embarrassing things like sexually transmitted diseases, and things which may split the group of friends, betrayals and relationship breakdowns. If you have something on your mind who can you talk to? You can phone on 01803 299999, write an email or text us at anytime. It’s probably worth just explaining who Samaritans are. Whilst you might think that there is a religious theme to what we do there is no religious agenda at all. Many people also
automatically connect Samaritans with ‘help for people who are suicidal’ and whilst this connection is
sometimes the right one most of those who contact us do for emotional support in a time of need. All sorts of people with all sorts of problems. As to the volunteers
you can speak to, Samaritans are all unpaid volunteers who hope to help others by giving people time to talk through any problem or issue and you can contact us
around the clock, we man the phones every minute of every day.
If
you want to speak to someone face to face all you have to do is to call into your local branch. South Devon’s branch is in Torquay, at 21 Warren Road where you will be very
welcome to sit and talk to a volunteer in a quiet room, just the two of you. Torquay branch Director Robert says: ‘We try to make sure that its clear to young people that the Samaritans offer support to them as much if not more than older people. Young people have issues and problems and some don’t feel they have anyone to turn to who will listen and won’t judge them in some way,’ adding ‘we don’t pass on anything we are told, absolutely nothing and you don’t even have to tell us your name.’ If you are reading
this you or someone you know might consider helping us to help others. If you would like to find out how you help just contact us. We would love to hear from you because we always need help to keep going. Do you need any special training or background? the answer is a big NO. Robert adds: ‘Many people think you have to be special to be a
Samaritan, you don’t really, We don’t look for volunteers of a particular type or age, we are all ordinary people who come from a wide range of backgrounds. The one key thing we have in common is the wish to help people in need by lending an ear and give a little time for them to talk.’ The Torquay branch is open and helping people seven days a week, 24 hours each day.
‘It’s a team effort to make sure that if someone needs help we are here for them,’ says Robert. ‘If you do want to find out more just call us, we would love to hear from you.’ Every few months the Torquay branch
welcomes a new group of volunteers so recruitment is always ongoing. ‘You ask anyone in our friendly branch,’ says Robert. ‘being a Samaritan volunteer can be challenging but also very rewarding. If you are reading this and can spare some time please think of helping us help others.’ Please phone or write to the
Recruitment Secretary, Samaritans of South Devon, 21 Warren Road, Torquay TQ2 5TQ or phone 07531 789828 (volunteering number only).
