Pilates courses 2012 – therapy for your body!

THE art of Pilates is not just to become extra bendy and supply and to gain long, lean muscles which will immediately improve how your body looks, but its main aim is to strengthen the ‘core’ muscles.

These ‘core’ muscles are the deepest layer of muscles and are responsible for supporting the skeleton, so by strengthening them, you will improve posture, stabilise the pelvis, lower back and shoulder areas.

As you work through your Pilates sessions getting better and stronger with the set movements your whole body will slowly come into balance as your deeper, ‘core’ muscles will sufficiently support your superficial muscles which lie on top, deterring injuries, aches and pains.

Gilly Green, of G.H. Fitness, is a regisgered personal trainer and has 27 years of working in the fitness business – she works one to one with Pilates clients as well as running group classes in the Teignbridge, Totnes and Torbay areas.

She says: ‘Pilates is the best form of exercise to

give your body a complete overhaul whether you are an elite sportsperson, a bad back sufferer or you simply want to take more responsibility for your body.

‘Doing a Pilates programme is rather like

working on your ‘underwear’ muscles – if you have good, supportive underwear everything else that lies on top looks better and works better.

‘It is also suitable for everyone, whether you use it as your only form of exercise of whether you use it as a complement with other more vigorous activities.’

G.H. Fitness run numerous courses for all abilities and introduced their new Sport Specific Pilates on a Monday evening in Newton Abbot which has become very popular with runners, triathletes and rowers who want a self help set of Pilates exercises to recuperate their bodies between training sessions.

LAST term The Maynard School launched ‘Aspire’, a new enrichment initiative for students in Year 11 and the Sixth Form who are willing to go beyond the classroom door as they make decisions about their future career paths.

In the Sixth Form, students take part in ‘Aspire Plus’ where they will continue to develop their interests and skills with a wide range of activities. Support for application to the most competitive courses at universities such as Oxbridge, Medical or Veterinary School will be part of the programme.

The first unit of Aspire Plus was ‘Ten things to do before you complete your UCAS application’, which included entering an essay competition to extend and improve skills; getting some work experience or doing voluntary work; and taking advantage of the extracurricular activities within the school to demonstrate teamwork and determination.

The Aspire

programme aims to help students decide exactly what they want for their future, and how to achieve that future.

The Maynard is currently accepting applications for entry in September 2012. The entrance

assessment dates for this year are: Thursday 12 January 2012 (11+); Monday 23 January 2012 (7+). However, we welcome girls throughout the year, and entrance
