Local Matters with John Goodwin John Goodwin
2012 Already I must start by wishing all Felixstowe Flyer readers a very happy new year and of course many more happy new years to come. I am typing this as "this year" when in fact it was typed "last year" when of course "this year" was still "next year" and
last year was 2010! Having got the this year and next year scenario out of the way many of us are currently enjoying various Carol Services, events that I love to go to. The format is usually, have a sing, listen to God's word, have a bit more of a sing, eat a mince pie, swop insults with friends and go home. Great!
Health check or ticking time bomb Following a chance conversation with a Suffolk County Council officer we were able to organise two free health check events, one at the Hope Trust in Maidstone Road and one at The Memorial Hall at Trimley St Martin. The whole idea was to give a check for such delights as Cholesterol, Heart dis- ease, Kidney disease and possible strokes. Also involved were Suffolk Family Carers, Live Well Suffolk and the Expert Patients Programme. Most people of course toddle off with a smile on their faces as the results show "all clear", some people of course are not so lucky and they are the "Ticking Time Bombs". These people walk round will all sorts of undiagnosed ailments, following a health check these ailments can hopefully be treated and life can move on. One such "Ticking Time Bomb" was Paul who runs the Hope Trust, he looks incredibly fit and well and was amazed to be told he had problems, these problems he is now able to control and deal with. By the way, what is the Hope Trust and what do they do, go along and ask would be my sugges- tion, they do all sorts of good stuff.
Who needs a Health check anyway? Some of us were recently having a discussion on the sad fact that going out and getting blind drunk is now viewed as a reasonable way of life. The conver- sation then turned to people we all used to know who were alcoholics, most now dead and all were a waste of a good life. I really enjoy a glass of some- thing red but I fail to see the point in getting totally wasted in the name of a good time. The thought that some parents allow their offspring to go out in what is known as a "preloaded" condition somehow seems beyond belief. I suppose that drinking is a bit like smoking, it may get hold of others but not me, thus is the belief of one of our grandsons.
Felixstowe CCTV system. Many different organisations and individuals have put a great deal of time, effort and funding into get- ting our town equipped with a CCTV system. Like all these things we had a variety of salesmen along, all promising a system that would be cost effective and would help in the fight against crime. A dedicated band of volunteers were recruited to man the sys- tem and one would think that all would be well. Sadly not so, there have sorts of problems from the controls not working properly, to a lack of correct lamp posts to mount the cameras on, there have also been numerous problems with clarity of the images ect ect. The list goes on, so much so that the volunteers are in danger of losing heart, we have been promised that the on-going list of problems will "soon" be sorted, we can but hope so.
Felixstowe Response Police returning I am delighted to be able to report that Felixstowe is again to become a "response hub" for the Police, great news for our area. Many of us said the new system would not work and unless I am mistaken I think we have been proved to be correct. Not sure if this is a victory for common sense or a "new direc- tion" for Suffolk Police, I don't really care, I just think it is good news that we are to have a response team here in Felixstowe again.
Felixstowe Listening Service The listening service was officially launched at the Library on Tuesday 13th December, the launch was attended by the Mayor and of course Steph and her team looked after us regally. Then again being treat- ed regally at the library is what we all now expect and love about the place. The need for a Listening Service in our area was identified and all sorts of people quickly agreed to become a part of the serv- ice. A free venue was soon found, funding was found and after a very short time the service was formed and has now been launched. Often things in public life move really slowly, meetings follow meetings, minutes are taken at these meetings and hours are wasted, yet the Listening Service identi- fied a need and the rest just followed on. No prizes for guessing whose hand was upon this particular venture.
Future events to watch out for The Carnival Association are again holding the Felixstowe's Got Talent shows, these events will take place every Saturday night during February. Hopefully this year's acts will be of the same very high standard as were most of last year's, that way we will have a very good event upon our hands. Funds raised will of course go towards Carnival cof- fers until after the Carnival proper in August when with a bit of luck some local charities will again be recipients of donations.
