Historically, the Cobb allowed the town to develop as both a major port and a shipbuilding centre from the 13th century onwards, as well as providing both a breakwater to protect the town from storms and an artificial harbour. Destroyed or severely damaged then reconstructed over the centuries, it was totally rebuilt in 1820 using stone quarried from Portland. Captain Sir Richard Spencer RN also carried out his pioneering lifeboat design work here, leading to the RNLI being formed. The Cobb also features in Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion, and in the film and novel, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, by local writer John Fowles. Still very busy today, it’s used by both local fishermen and holiday
makers, with numerous moorings available as well as unspoilt sheltered south-facing beaches and of course fossil hunting.

Visitors to Lyme Regis should contact the harbour staff when planning their passage to confirm depth available, or if you wish to book a berth ahead. Fin and long keel boats can pick up one of the visitors’ buoys outside the harbour or drop their anchor in the general area of these buoys, but are advised to stay to seaward of these as the area closer to the shore shallows considerably, especially at low water spring tides (LWS). There is a visitors’ pontoon (seasonal) which is attached to
Victoria Pier, allowing access to the harbour at all states of the tide. The landward end dries at LWS but at the seaward end there is approx 1.4m of water at low tide. Vessels are also welcome inside the harbour, and in the summer months spaces are held for yachts against the harbour wall. The harbour has more recently hosted numerous international
regattas and sporting events, during the 2011 Lifeboat week celebrations the Red Bull wakeboarding team came to the harbour and spectacularly jumped over the 7m wide North Wall!
