College Park Community Paper Letter from the Publisher Stayin’ Alive Special thanks to photographers

"The older you get, the faster time flies.” Boy, that old saying is sure ringing true to me these days. It’s so hard to be- lieve 2012 is here! It seems like yesterday I was listening to the Bee Gees on my record player, imagining what it would be like in the 2000s—would we be using jet packs to get around, would we be going to the moon on vacation? It’s funny how, when you are a kid, the future seems so

very far away. One thing I never saw in my future was that I would be run-

ning this paper. And what fun this past year has been as I’ve learned so much more about so many of you through our Com- munity Spotlight stories, Word on the Street and other special features. The best part has been your enthusiasm toward the paper. I was at a fundraiser recently when one reader came up to tell me that she looked forward to getting her Community Paper in the mail as much as her People magazine. My staff was thrilled to hear that! The advertisers have also been so grateful for your re- sponses, one telling me recently that they had their best Sunday ever after running an ad about how they offer football games on 30 HD TVs. Thank you for supporting their businesses, as we wouldn’t be able to share all of the exciting things happening in our neighborhood if it weren’t for them. One of the most rewarding phone calls I got last year was

from the American Cancer Society, letting me know how you responded to their need for drivers to get cancer patients to their

YOUR RETIREMENT IS WORTH PLANNING FOR

You’ve heard it said before: Timing is everything. Especially when it comes to starting your Social Security benefits. The truth is the majority of retired Americans already drawing benefits receive permanently reduced amounts due to ill-informed timing decisions. Don’t make the same mistakes other retirees make. It could mean leaving money on the table at a time when you’ll need it most.

That’s why it’s important to develop a strategy to maximize your household Social Security benefits and enhance your overall retire- ment income plan. After all, a little planning now can go a long way – and in this case, we’re talking a lifetime.

doctor appointments and treatments. Knowing how you re- sponded to that request, I’m hoping you’ll respond to this one. I would like to challenge each of you or your business to get in- volved with College Park’s Relay for Life, which will be held April 28 - 29 at Edgewater High School. I don’t know what the heck is going on, but it seems every

time I turn around these days, someone I know is being affected by cancer, either directly or through someone they love. This past year way too many of our College Park neighbors have been stricken with the disease, and my heart breaks for them as they endure chemo, doctor visits and uncertainty. It’s such a feeling of helplessness, not being able to do more than to bring a meal and say a prayer. This is why getting involved with Relay for Life can at least make us feel like we are doing something big to help fight this cruel affliction. The next meeting is January 12 at 6pm in the lobby of the EHS gym. You can also contact Melissa Long at 407 -843-8680 or melissa.long@cancer.org for more information. If you don't have a New Year’s resolution yet, consider getting in- volved in the cancer battle. Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2012!
