relationship with Ted that in a wonderful way says it like it was: “Your best friend Ted has crossed over into heaven, his real home. You were comrades from the cradle, rambling and roving over the prairie lands, growing up with the jack rabbits, sage brush and vast blue sky. You worked and played together. Those sights, sounds and memories must spill over you now and then. They are one of the many of God’s gifts to you. May the giver of every good and perfect gift comfort you and give you peace in the days ahead. Be assured of our love and prayers.” Ted was a best friend for

89 years. Being best friends for that length of time is unique, but he gave me a lot of memories. It has been said you remain close without any cross words to each other. For all those years I never heard Ted swear no matter what the conditions. Both of us had wonderful parents. Ted had a picture of us together before either of us could walk. It was three miles between the ranches. As we grew older we

used to walk back and forth and think nothing of it! Later, we rode horses. I have to pick and choose

incidents along the way as there are too many to recount. One humorous happening sticking out in my mind was as follows. Periodically we would take Ted and my two boys on a three- day trip. Ted would stay at our house the night before we left. My wife Ruby and I had just bought a new house, hence friends would come over to inspect the new digs! One night at nine p.m. the doorbell rang as I was walking down the hall in my skivvies. There was no time to get to my room so Ted popped his head out of the door of his bedroom and handed me a pair of his own pants. The day was saved and all was well but it was a close call. I think we were ten years old

when we came upon a sack of broken pipes that belonged to Ted’s dad. We thought we were really something as we stuffed paper inside and lit them with a match… until Ted’s mother saw what was happening. When we were very young,

Ted would spend the night at our house and we would play checkers and dominoes. Ted

would win and I’d say, “That is not the way it is played.” My folks would let me win. I could not understand anyone winning but me. But bless him, when I played with Ted, I had to earn my win! At my wedding, no one else

but Ted could be my best man. The ceremony was held in a small country church in Texas. Ted and I stood outside at a side door waiting for a signal from the organist to go inside. It was given and I took a step to open the door. But, heavens to Betsy, there was broadleaf weed between my new shoes and the cement step. My foot slipped and my hand hit the wall of the church with a resounding clap. Ted caught my elbow to keep me from falling. My mother thought I had fainted and my bride-to- be’s Aunt Clara snorted! After that, all went well! Now, 63 years later, it is

fun to reminisce! I could write a book about Ted and me and our friendship, but Ted is in his heavenly permanent home and I am ninety years old. But I have given you, dear reader, a glimpse of two lives blended together that enriched both of them. ♥
