Jan 4, 2012 … Tell Them You Saw Their Ads in The Prairie Times … www.prairietimes.com… Prairie Times 7 Susan Bishop

M

y quest to follow a simple lifestyle began over thirty

years ago when Jerry brought me to the country and we built a “house on the prairie.” Because of the high cost of putting in a telephone, we did not have one. Mobile phones were getting to be popular then, but they were cumbersome and you definitely could not stick one in your pocket. If the phone rang, the horn on the vehicle would honk. Running to answer the phone was sometimes painful if you didn’t have on your shoes! Ah, the good old days. It was ten years before we

were able to get a land line into our home and start our home based business that you know as the Prairie Times. Thirty days before we put out our first issue, we bought a personal computer. I had no idea how to turn it on much less build ads or do paste- ups. The ability to upload to the press was not a reality yet and we pasted the pages on to sheets the press provided. Jerry had to personally take them to Greeley and wait while they printed our publication. I had no clip art, no copy machine, and no way to scan in text. Everything had to be typed into the computer and there was no such thing as being emailed a manuscript. As a matter of fact, it took us a while to get a bank of writers. Thank goodness Jerry had a lot of experience in sales! Put all that together with

helping Jerry’s mom keep the ranch buildings up and home- schooling Charity and JD, and I would definitely say that our lives were more complicated than we wanted. A simple lifestyle is different

for everyone. I have a friend who lives a few miles from Parker who thinks running to town on her day off is part of a simple lifestyle. Because we live 60 miles from Parker, going there is

an all day event and to be avoided whenever I can! Other friends simplify their lives by choosing food that can be microwaved or by eating out. I make most things from scratch, grind my own wheat, make my own bread, and even cook my own dog food! Eating out for us is a special occasion rather than a lifestyle. Many people I know choose

churches for their convenience. They commute to work and don’t want to commute to church. Our family drives ninety miles round trip to go to a church that teaches us how to study the Bible and encourages families to take responsibility for the spiritual welfare of their own children. As you can see, simplicity can

vary from family to family. What does a simple lifestyle mean then? Easy? Uncomplicated? As I go through life, more and more my choices are based on who I want to become. The food I eat will determine my weight, my health, and my attitude. The friends I hang around with will change me. The activities I choose for my spare time do matter. The church I attend will either create a thirst for knowledge or it will not. Not one of us is standing still. We are all becoming different than we were. I want to have the will and the way to live a simply full life. ♥
