I was reminded of the truth of this scripture by, of all things, my peonies. This was a good year for peonies. The blossoms were huge, fragrant, and white with little bits of pink inside. I had bouquets in every room for a few weeks. Then one day I became aware that although the blossoms had fallen off, there were still numerous buds— buds that appeared healthy and firm. I waited and I waited. It soon became obvious that these buds were not going to burst forth into blooms. A reminder, I guess, that everything has its own season and no matter how delightful the crop, it cannot thrive past its time. As I age, I think a lot about

the seasons of life. I find that the natural seasons, spring, summer, fall and winter each have their own special delight as well as their own inconveniences or disappointments. I have suffered some hurts

in the last few years that resulted from my ignoring the fact that life itself has seasons and I am in a new one. (Winter, I think.) I have been lucky enough to live close to my children except when they were

in college or the Navy. It has been a tradition for the whole family to get together for every occasion, whether a camping trip, potluck dinner, baseball game, skiing or whatever, Within the last couple of years I often feel somewhat excluded from these events. I occasionally find myself saying things that were subconsciously intended to make the “offending” child feel guilty. I hate that trait and spend more time praying for forgiveness for sins of my tongue than anything else. I think I have

finally realized that my children have simply passed into the next season of their lives. They now have their own grown children,

with their own diverse

interests, to “hang out” with. My daughter is also a grandmother and is currently wrapped up in what, so far in life, was my favorite season of all. My family loves me. I do not

doubt that. When I have resentful feelings I try to remember that I am entering into another season. After all God told me there is a season for every thing under heaven. Since I have been in denial for so long, I am not too sure what this season is all about. I guess I’ll just hand my Father the reins and relax into whatever it is He brings my way. ♥
