I

t was a hot afternoon on October 10, 2000—and

unusually hot for the time of year. I was fully dressed out in my football uniform. Nobody wanted to practice that day, it was obvious. We were all worn out from the previous game. Especially me. I had received a mild concussion the night before. But I was a rebel and still practiced when the coaches said that I could sit out for a few practices. I would give anything in my possession to re-live that one day. We started out with our usual stretches and linemen drills. They seemed to be particularly boring. I was ready to hit someone hard and show them not to mess with me. We finally got to the hitting drills and I was ready. I got into the line to tackle but unfortunately there was the smallest guy going up against me. I didn’t want to hit him hard because I might hurt him so I moved to run the ball. I was now ready to practice. I got the ball and ran full speed bracing for the hit. The tackle was not a hard

hit. He just wrapped me up and threw me down. But when I hit the ground I knew something was wrong. Football is a rough sport and I was used to being banged around but this time things were different. I gasped for air but I couldn’t catch my breath. I slowly got up and walked to the end of the line. My heart was racing and I still could not catch my breath. ―You all right Webb?‖

―Yeah, Coach, I’ll be all

right,‖ I lied. ―Do you need any medical

assistance?‖ he asked after I could not go back in the drill. ―Yeah, Coach, I need to sit

down for a little bit.‖ The trainer came over and

looked at me. She said I should go to the doctor and let them X-ray my ribs. Once there, I was taken in right away. They took some X-rays and they came back negative. I knew something was wrong but they

couldn’t be still long enough for the last pictures so the doctor pulled me out. I heard him on the phone calling another doctor at home telling him he needed to perform an emergency surgery. I did not know at the time that the emergency was me. The doctor took me back to

my parents and explained to them that I had ruptured my spleen. I had fractured it vertically and horizontally. My internal organ was shattered into four separate pieces. They took me into another room and started to prep me for surgery. They gave me more IV’s and I became very tired. The pain was still there but I was so sleepy I didn’t care. My girlfriend then

came in my room. She was crying. I didn’t know why. If I’d have known, I would have been

couldn’t find anything. They gave me some pain pills and said I should just sleep it off. I took two of the pills when I got home. They were supposed to knock me out but I was in so much pain I couldn’t sleep. My parents decided I needed to go to the emergency room just in case. I fell asleep on the way there. I was reluctant to go since there was nothing wrong except for a sharp pain every once in a while. They took me into the

emergency room surprisingly fast. They gave me an IV and said to wait there for my CAT Scan. A different nurse came back and wheeled me off. During the Scan the pains came back. It was the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my entire life. I

crying also. The doctors did not tell me the danger I was in. They rolled me into the surgery room and I told her goodbye. When she left the whole room was freezing. I was almost unconscious and the only thing I can remember was that it cold. It felt like death was moving in on me. His cold claw were grasping at me, and I passed out. I woke up some time later

in Intensive Care. I thought I had died and gone to hell. I had wires and cords all over my body and monitors going off as my blood pressure changed. The nurses came running in to turn off the monitors and told me I would be all right. I finally fell back asleep and when I woke up
