Radisson staff in Lima share gifts of home and heart. As part of Carlson Hotels, Americas Responsible Business Action Month, employees of the Radisson Hotel Decapolis Miraflores and Radisson Hotel San isidro—both located in Lima, Peru—pooled their energy and resources to take an active role in making a difference in the lives of local children in need. Through employee raffles, supplier donations and generous gifts from each hotel, 26 employees formed a team that spent a day cooking, playing and eating with the children of El Niño Emanuel Orphanage in the impoverished outskirts of Lima.
In addition to food, used clothing and toys donated by employees, and medicines, milk and school supplies donated by a variety of hotel suppliers, employees also held a raffle that raised USD 560 to purchase candy and gifts for the children. And in a generous act of corporate hospitality, the hotels added bedding, bath linens and other personal care items to the collection. Fifty-nine children without parents or family—ranging in age from two months to 20 years—were touched by this day of caring.
Care packages for troops. The Country inn & Suites Mesa, Arizona showed their support and gratitude to an Army unit of 50 soldiers stationed in a rural area of Afghanistan where they have no running water or electricity by creating and sending them care packages filled with toiletries, snacks and other items.
The hotel enlisted their own army of employees, guests and local businesses to collect the items for the care packages. A local dentist donated 100 toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste, while a local band donated one night’s tips to the
cause. The final tally was valued at over USD 2,150 in items and USD 270 in cash donations which was used to cover the cost of shipping.
The success and appreciation of the first shipment immediately inspired the hotel to begin collecting for holiday care packages consisting of candy, hot cocoa and holiday decorations.
Radisson Blu Aqua gets a head start on giving. Approximately 15,000 children who attend a Chicago Public School are homeless. Even though they were not yet open for business, the staff of the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel Chicago joined in Responsible Business Action Month 2011 by participating in the “Kits for Kidz” program to benefit students from the Chicago Public School system whose families cannot afford to purchase their school supplies for the upcoming school year.
The hotel was able to purchase one kit per staff member with the funds raised. The Kits, which include all of the necessary school supplies for the school year as well as a backpack, will benefit either a primary, elementary or junior high school student in need.
A truly pet friendly hotel. The Country inn & Suites ithaca, New york showed their support for the local Tompkins County SPCA no-kill animal shelter by raising over USD 1,000 in cash and supplies. The pet-friendly hotel donated 50% of the hotel pet fees for the month of September, and encouraged employees and guests to donate as well. “Our entire staff participated and were excited about the project because they are all animal lovers,” says General Manager Ilana Bobroff.
Hotel employees experience Childhood projects for themselves. Every September, employees at Carlson hotels and corporate offices around the globe raise money for World Childhood Foundation during Responsible Business Action Month. As a result of that involvement, several hotel employees got to see the results of their efforts firsthand. Representatives from the Radisson Plaza Hotel Minneapolis and the Radisson Hotel at Los Angeles Airport traveled to Brazil, where Childhood Brazil is working to protect and support victims of child sexual exploitation and trafficking.
The trip began at the Radisson Hotel São Paulo Faria Lima, an Atlantica Hotels International property. Atlantica, which is Childhood Brazil’s largest corporate donor, is known for its outstanding culture of support for the organization. That support was immediately evident at the Radisson’s front desk, where guests could purchase dolls and key chains, drop money into a donation box or round up their bill—all in support of Childhood. The group then visited two organizations supported by Childhood Brazil: Camará in São Vicente offers a safe haven for at-risk and sexually exploited children where they can seek counseling, join in art and dance groups, and study. Lua Nova in Sorocaba provides shelter for pregnant girls and young mothers who were victims of child sexual exploitation. Carlson Hotels, Americas donated USD 10,000 to each organization to help further their efforts.
The trip proved to be a life-changing experience for all. “Now we have seen it for ourselves, and our realities are forever changed,” said the participants.
