FLUID MOVEMENT AND RESPONSE

When we dance our way to fitness, we attune our mind and body to become fluid in movement and response. The key to acquiring this ‘body knowledge’ is to practice and play our dance the way athletes practice and play their game.

Whether, a sole competitor or member of a team, the play begins within. The athlete unifies his body, mind and spirit with one purpose in mind: to perform his or her best in order to win. For the individual or for the team, the win always requires a unified effort to accomplish the goal. When the exceptional happens, it’s beyond the win, beyond the expectations, beyond the odds - it’s elevating the performance into the inspirational. Professional dancers may experience this during a single or perhaps several performances when their audience’s thundering applause brings tears to everyone’s eyes as they stand in appreciation for the shared exceptional experience. Whether on the stage, on the court, on the field; inspired performances enrich everyone’s life in so many ways.

As in every athletic endeavor, the whole is more powerful than the individual parts. If our body parts behaved independently of each other, it might still be “dancing” and perhaps some would consider it an exceptional performance, but not in a good way. With the Body Knowledge System® when we practice our dance, and dance our practice, we unify every element of our personhood to perform at the top of our game. Few of us will beat the odds to become successful professional performers, whether as highly paid athletes or famous dancers, but all of us have potential to inspire through commitment to improve our personal performance.

Motion, movement, rhythm, beat are external expressions of who we are internally.

“Dance is the hidden language of the soul” ~ Martha Graham (1894-1981) That quotation applies to any inspired performance whether it occurs in sports, on the stage, in a concert hall or in a museum. Our actions reveal us, who we really are. Sports express the person and tell us about the athlete beyond their physical ability. Even the decision to play as an individual or to contribute to a team reveals much about the person, the athlete.

Dance is another physical manifestation of the person, providing insight into the dancer. When the dance is observed, the audience discovers the person behind the performance. For our purposes, the dance is a very personal endeavor. When the Body Knowledge Dancer® practices his or her dance, they learn more about themselves through the feelings that emerge during the performance. During the movements, the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of a person unify into emotions in motion, a pure expression of the self.

For competitors, peak performance usually occurs in front of an audience when everything is on the line and exceeding expectations is a requirement for success. For the rest of us, there is no judgment, no competition, no evaluation of our performance when we practice our dance and dance our practice.

Body Knowledge takes you Beyond Limits!
