experienced one of the most rewarding days of my life the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. My oldest daughter Kaitlin arrived back home prior to completing her first semester at college. My wife and I became more excited as the days approached for her return, and

on the day she arrived we could not stop looking at our watches as her plane made preparations to land. She has been away from home since early July, when she relo- cated to Los Angeles to start earning some tuition money to help finance her educa- tion. She has not asked for any money and is proud to fund her life in Los Angeles without our financial help. My wife and I are so proud of her and miss her in more ways than we can ever express. But she was home briefly before returning to take finals. We value every minute we have with her and are proud of her growing up in so many ways. Did I mention soon after she got off the plane the school texted me her bill for next semester? Do they have their timing right or what? Early the next morning there was more joy for our family as we celebrated mass with our children, our two juniors at their high school witnessing the energy of recently graduated alumni brought together with students, faculty and clergy. These were magical moments that will resonate within me for a lifetime. The community that we have enjoyed for the previous four years together grew by adding future graduates to our school along with new faculty and visiting middle school students, all whom we celebrated mass with. Should I mention I also got our final bill for this school year in the mail today? More great timing as we build our community!

Our community at MAC is so much like the community that I shared with you above. Our membership is a group of individuals and families with like interests and diverse participation in 24 sporting programs, dozens of social activities and many dining opportunities. Our community

allows members to enjoy lifelong competi- tive activities on and off campus, friendships, and club service on more than 40 commit- tees. It expands and contracts as members leave membership for various reasons and new members add to our communities. Regardless of how the membership changes, our community always grows and friendships develop that lead to lifelong relationships. Did I mention that your monthly bill went out on Thursday, Dec. 29?

On page 16 of this magazine you will find an explanation of your dues. Yes, dues are increasing by $7 monthly for senior families and proportionally for other classes of membership. I am pleased to tell you that you are receiving a credit for prior year surpluses. The Board recognized that members should be credited for surpluses when possible. In 2012 we plan to fully fund depreciation, and this created the oppor- tunity for the Board to feel comfortable by reducing the dues increase by $3 monthly. The majority of 2012 dues increases are $5.37, recognizing the last year to fully fund the club’s depreciation load.

Did you know?

What is the Club’s most valuable real estate? What is the name of the athlete large as life on the Sports Pub back bar to the right? What was the most popular meal served in the club this year? How many parking spaces are in our Parking Structure? How many lockers are in the men’s base- ment locker room? What is the biggest steak Chefs Boulot and Oswalt have served in the Men’s Bar? How many lottery applicants are drawn on Wednesday, Jan. 25? The answers to these questions are on page 67.

Lastly January is the beginning of the new

year’s resolution season. Yes, the exercise and conditioning space is cramped while we expand it. (As I have always said, the pain will be worth the gain!) I encourage our members who can, to try and spread your workout routines to miss the peak times of the day. This should lead to a more relaxing workout. In August your patience is rewarded with 3,000 new square feet of functional space, along with updated studios and surrounding areas amounting to 12,000 square feet of improvements. WM
