MAC Masters Swimmers Shine at Annual Meet

AC held its annual Masters Swim Meet in the West Pool on Sunday, Oct. 16. More than 80 swimmers came from Oregon, Washington, Idaho and even Arizona for the one-day meet. Twelve were MAC Masters swim- mers: Ellen Ferguson, Sharon Foley, Jon Gudman, Aaron Parker, Mike Peyton, Scot Sullivan, Lauren Thies, Eric Wan, Brent Washburne, Ben Weston and new swim- mers Jason Kurian and Colin MacLaren. MAC swimmers Diane Sherwood and Julie Carpenter organized and ran the meet, and they were assisted by many other swimmers who worked as announcers, timers, runners, safety marshals and hospi- tality workers.
MAC swimmers rewrote the record books that day.
MAC masters swam a total of eight relays, and six of them broke records. Four of them set new Northwest Zone records, and two of them set national records. • Ferguson swam on four relay teams at the meet. Her team with three other Oregon swimmers broke an 11-year-old national record in the women’s 200-free- style relay by more than six seconds, and a three-year old National record in the

All 12 MAC swimmers swam two or more events, and everyone placed first or second in their age group in most, if not all, of their events.

2011 SCM Zone Championships Swimmers Showdown with Bellevue Coming Up S
aturday, Jan. 7 marks the 10th annual MAC vs. Oregon City Swim Team and Bellevue Swim Club ‘Tri-uel’ meet, which this year will take place at Hazen High School in
Renton, Wash.
This is an opportunity for the club’s 14 and under swimmers to compete, especially with the addition of MAC development swimmers competing this year. In past years MAC is right on Bellevue’s heals, but cannot make up the deficit without a critical mass of younger swimmers. This year the team has eased younger swimmers into competi- tion through numerous fun meets and the MAC Red and White Meet, which took place Saturday, Dec. 17 and was a huge success.
Junior members not participating in activities this new year should look into swim- ming, the MAC swim team takes swimmers at any point in the year. Anyone interested in joing may contact Spencer Crum at 503-517-7504 or
scrum@themac.com. Anyone who loves to swim and cannot commit to year-round swimming, keep an eye out for informa- tion on the MAC club championship scheduled for May 7. All members are eligible and encouraged to compete. Visit the articles section of
theMAC.com for a full scoreboard from the meet. WM

The last regional meet of the year was held at the nearby Tualatin Hills pool on Nov. 5 and 6. After the full year of swim meets, Washburne was the only MAC Masters swimmer with enough strength left to compete with 90 other swimmers at the Northwest Zone Championships. He joined up with other Oregon swimmers in a relay team and held off perennial rival Washington. Washburne helped to set a new Oregon record in the men’s 400-freestyle relay, and he had two first-place swims and one third-place swim.
