The Early Birds Honor a Faithful Friend
o honor Fathom Arnold – an exem- plary dog – the Early Birds have made a donation from their special funds to Guide Dogs for the Blind. The donation came from money the dog-loving Birds raised from selling red winged M doggie bandanas.

Fathom, a yellow lab, was well-loved by the MAC women who met him with his owner, Colleen Arnold, in the women’s locker room on Saturday mornings. Colleen is visually impaired and Fathom was a MAC member with his own photo membership card on his collar. They went to the early yoga class, then to the Exercise and Conditioning Room, and finally to the beauty bar.
Fathom was kind and gentle. Those who knew him were impressed by how helpful service animals can be for disabled athletes. Sadly, last summer Fathom’s legs gave out and he couldn’t get himself up. He had a very aggressive form of cancer, so euthanasia was the only option. Early Bird committee member Leslie Vanbellinghen told us, “We all cried in the locker room, yoga studio and E&C area.” Fathom’s photo is on the wall in the yoga studio. The Early Birds would like to thank all the MAC members who bought doggie bandanas, making possible this donation to Guide Dogs for the Blind. We also want to express our sincere gratitude to all those who supported our Turkey Trot and collection of toys and toiletries, benefiting Yolanda House, the YWCA shelter for families escaping domestic abuse. The generosity is truly appreciated. WM
