Handball Mixes it up with Olympic Club
I
n October, a MAC Handball team of six players did battle against the mighty team from San Francisco’s Olympic Club. The teams were evenly matched and scores were extremely close. MAC’s No. 1 team of Steve Lee and John Van Gorder were pitted against the tough team of Sean Buckley and partner. The match was extremely close, with the MAC team taking the first game. However, the Olympic Club team pulled out a match victory by winning the next two games, enjoying home court advantages and fan support. Also playing in the exchange was Roger Swanson, Rocky Benevento, Kent Vickery and Otto Van Walstijn. Once again this year the matches were very exciting with good hospitality provided by the Olympic Club. The exchange continues in May.
On Friday, Oct. 7, the first of eight Pro Stops was held in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. Jean Kastner, Jennifer Hinman, Troy Peterson and Steve Grow made the trek. This is an annual tournament put on by Jake Plummer of Denver Broncos fame. Both Kastner and Hinman were playing in both the pro singles and doubles. Kastner and her partner lost in the semifinals and Hinman and her partner lost in the finals. In singles, Hinman made the finals but lost to a very tough competitor from New York. Grow and Peterson entered the 40 doubles; however, there were not enough teams so they were bumped to the Pro-Am doubles. Unfortunately neither one of them is a Pro. They played well and went to tiebreaker in both of their matches, but came up short. Peterson and Grow’s ages add up to 100, and their opponents in the last match had a combined age of 47. WM
