MAC Committees: Getting Involved S

quash committee member Tina Lam tried out a new sport at MAC, and liked it so much she wound up serving on the committee. Lam, who sits on the squash committee, joined the club in 1999. Like many others involved in the commit- tee structure, her path to greater involvement started with her children.

How did you get involved in squash?

I did not play suash before I oined A. I oined the club shortly after my second child was born and did not have time to do much in those first few years. Squash had been an interest of mine since graduate school where I had played once or twice. ore recently I decided I wanted to master a sport with a moving ball while I am still young enough to pursue it vigorously.

My three sons were just coming of age and that’s what made it possible. They had just brought on Member Coach David Spiro to focus on the Junior program and he started a Family Clinic, which all my boys joined. Rather than just sit in the stands watching them I decided to start playing myself.

How did you find yourself involved with the committee?

At first, my youngest outright refused

to play, but he’s actually the one who plays the most seriously now. I oined the committee because he was becoming more involved, the Junior program was gaining momentum and I wanted to learn more about the sport.

Also, my husband had been on several committees. His experience had been rewarding in terms of the dis- cussions they had and the people he met.

Was it worth it? Absolutely. This is my second year on the commit-

tee and it’s been a great experience. I have learned so much about squash and the MAC. Being a committee member gave me the opportunity to be much more involved with various programs that I might not have normally been exposed to as a beginner in the sport – court renovations, tournament logistics, and recruit- ment and development of new members. As a result I have developed a deeper understanding and appreciation of the sport. I have always been impressed by how well run the A is and I thin the committee system could be one of the reasons why. The committee system can be confusing at first, but it seems to work effectively. WM
