Biblical Women Discussion series begins February 16

We’ve all heard about the “Real

Housewives” of New Jersey and Orange County. Now it’s time to hear about the real women of the Bible. The community is invited to attend a three-part series sponsored by the Adult Education Committee of Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation. The fi rst presentation, co-sponsored

by the Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation Sisterhood, features Rabbi Irwin Wiener discussing

“Seductresses in the Bible.”

Offered up right after Valentine’s Day, this tantalizing topic should provide new insights on love. The presentation will take place Thursday, February 16, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel Center on Sun Lakes Blvd. in Sun Lakes Country Club. The second presentation also features

Rabbi Wiener as he discusses his insights on Esther, heroine of the Jewish people for

saving them from destruction under the wicked Haman. This presentation will take place Tuesday, March 6, at 1:00 p.m., also in the Chapel Center. The fi nal presentation will be a panel

discussion moderated by Rabbi Wiener and featuring Rev. Dr. Vernon Meyer, pastor of the Sun Lakes United Church of Christ, and Rev. Toni Corrigan, of the Unity Church of Sun Lakes, in a lively discussion of the depiction of women in the Old and New Testaments. The date for this last event is Tuesday, April 3, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel Center. All three events are open to the

community. There will be no charge for participation. Please mark your calendars and

join us for what should be an

informative and eye-opening series. For more information, call Geri at 305-0123. 

Lutheran Braille workers host appreciation luncheon

On Tuesday, November 29, the Lutheran

Braille Workers of Risen Savior Lutheran Church held a volunteer appreciation breakfast in the fellowship hall of the church. Over 30 members were able to attend. Guests were Pastors Brinkman, Pfl ueger and Sproul along with executive director Mike Fischer and Bill Pauley, our facility manager. Rich Mente and Mike Scott

provided some great musical entertainment playing the banjo and guitar. This dedicated group of volunteers has reached a new milestone in that

it has now sent their

printed Braille books to 28 foreign countries and to 37 of the United States. Starting their fourth year

in January, the group meets

three hours weekly on Tuesday mornings in the church fellowship hall. 

Keeping a clutter-free mind

Marc Drake, Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church, Sun Lakes Albert Einstein was once asked, “How

many feet are there in a mile?” To the utter astonishment of the student who asked the question, Einstein replied, “I don’t know.” Was the great professor joking? Surely Einstein would know a simple fact that every school child is required to memorize. But Einstein wasn’t joking. When the student pressed for an

explanation of this apparent gap in Einstein’s knowledge, the professor declared, “I make it a rule not to clutter my mind with simple information that can fi nd in a book in fi ve minutes.” Albert

Einstein was not interested in trivial data. His passion was to explore the deep things of the universe, and as a result he became a pivotal fi gure in modern world history. Obviously there is much in our

culture that works against keeping our minds clutter-free. For example, through media we are bombarded with incessant messages, trivial information and advertisements (10,000 a day). Talk about the potential for mental clutter! But a passion to know the Creator

of this universe gives one a single- mindedness that

transcends the mental,

emotional, and relational clutter that — MIND cont. on page 103

Jewish Congregation Gala is a smashing success

Joyce Spartonos, Publicity A night to end all nights (in a great way,

of course) was the December 10 Gala in the Oakwood Ballroom hosted by the Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation and attended by approximately 250 people. What a sight to behold with everyone decked out in their best fi nery to help celebrate the multiple joyous occasions of the Congregation’s and Sisterhood’s 25th Anniversaries; Men’s Club’s 20th Anniversary, and our esteemed Rabbi Irwin Wiener’s 75th birthday! That the Gala was held on the 10th was

befi tting, as the evening was defi nitely a perfect “10.” From the souvenir journal

that everyone went home with, to the slide show, collages, entertainment provided by Thaddeus Rose and beautiful centerpieces that graced each table, you didn’t know where to feast your eyes fi rst. In addition to all that, the food was delicious and service outstanding. This was, without a doubt, the kind of event that

lifetime memories are

made of! Biggest kudos go to Shirley Shalett for

putting all this together. She assembled committees that worked their tails off to accomplish this amazing feat! Hats off to them all! What a fabulous way to wind up the year! 
