New Awe! Cappellas—seriously fun music
CLUBS AND CLASSES 49 40s 50s Club news
Nancy Fayfar, Publicity The 2011 Golf Cart Rally was held on
Saturday, November 19, and at exactly 1:00 p.m. a loud voice, aided by a microphone, said, “Ladies and Gentlemen, START YOUR ENGINES!” The crowd went wild as 58 golf cart engines erupted in a loud purrrrrrr. And the race started. It was a day worth remembering! Golf carts and several cars slowly but
surely emptied out of Oakwood’s parking lot and headed down the road looking to fi nd the 70 houses based on the 70 clues. The day was warm, the sun was bright, and the drivers and their navigators were smiling.
There were fi ve stops along the way
where drivers could pit for tires and fuel or play various games earning points that could lead to winning real money. Thank you, Ann Hurst, for heading up this portion of the day. At one stop, contestants who were not smiling were thrown in jail. We gathered $97 in bail money, released them, and are donating the money to Neighbors Who Care.
Left to right, back row: Chris Roen, baritone, and Sandy Bocynesky, lead. Front row: Gina Renner, bass, and Kay Davis, tenor.
Meet the New Awe! Cappellas. This is
a quartet of veteran musical barbershop harmony performers. The group has gained a reputation in the area for presenting entertaining programs. We have sung for Christmas
parties, birthday gatherings
and retirement celebrations. Our latest performances included appearances at a PEO Christmas Brunch
and the
Scandinavian Christmas Party. The New Awe! Cappellas are available
for almost every kind of special event. If you are looking for something different to give your sweetheart, then give your special someone a gift of music this Valentine’s Day. Look for more information in the February Splash. For information about booking
our quartet, please contact Chris Roen at 480-786-6969 or email
chrisgordy@yahoo.com.
Geri Weston was the overall leader
of the event committee and was assisted by 42 member volunteers. They were wonderful and did a tremendous job. There were scorekeepers, judges, game hosts, food committee people, decorating people, the ones who made up the clues, whose names are kept secret to protect them from disgruntled contestants. (Just kidding, it was Dick and Helen Harrold.) Contestants and volunteers, all 153 of
them, ended up in the Navajo Room of Sun Lakes Country Club for drinks and food. Prizes were awarded, pictures were taken, and people were trying to sign up early for next year’s event. Truly a day worth remembering! Our next event will be the Games
Derby on Saturday, January 21, at Sun Lakes Country Club, Arizona Room. If you would like to be part of
the
fun this year, dues are just $10 per person. For membership

BATTLE _________ - continued from page 30
to be called in to settle disputes between opposing fans. Over 20,000 attended the battle between Chick Webb and Benny Goodman in 1937. The Arizona Classic Jazz Society will
present their own “Battle of the Bands” between Bad Cactus Brass Band and 52nd Street Jazz Band, both based in the Phoenix area. Whereas the Savoy appointed a special jury to decide the winner, the audience will vote here. Both bands will appear on the same stage with each band alternating tunes. Since they’re all great musicians, your vote will likely depend on which style you prefer. Bad Cactus Brass Band is a New Orleans-
style Second Line parade jazz band. Their repertoire includes original dance music, funky street beats,
traditional Dixieland,
gospel, swing, and pop songs reinterpreted with a brass band sound. They feature tuba, drums, trumpets, saxophones, and trombones. The 52nd Street Jazz Band plays
“Chicago Style” jazz that emphasizes solos rather than ensemble playing and substitutes the string bass for the tuba and the guitar for the banjo. Their style is more swing, four- to-the-bar beat,
rather than the two-beat
style of many traditional Dixieland bands. They play a wide variety of tunes. Come and encourage your favorite
band on Sunday, January 29, 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort, One San Marcos Place, Chandler. Cost
is $10 ACJS members, $15 non-
members and under 18 free. Join ACJS on the 19th and get in free (couple $35, single $25 for yearly membership). For more information call 480-620-3941 or go to
