Award-winning children’s book author Conrad Storad had a little help from a plush friend as he told the tale of “Rattlesnake Rules” to rapt listeners at SS. Simon & Jude Catholic School in support of the school’s language arts curriculum (submitted photo).

Local author Storad reads at school SS. Simon & Jude Catholic School,

located at 6351 N. 27th Ave., recently hosted award-winning children’s author Conrad Storad. Storad’s latest book, Arizona Way Out West & Wacky, co- authored with Lynda Exley, was chosen by the Arizona State Library as the 2012 ONEBOOKAZ for Kids. SS&J students even had the opportunity to purchase an autographed book during his visit to the school. Storad presented his “fun nonfic-

tion” (informational fiction) to kinder- garten through fourth grade in support with the school’s language arts curricu- lum. The children enjoyed Storad’s reading of his stories, and sharing what happens when he writes. Then he answered students’ questions. With the fifth through eighth

grades, Storad shared his nonfiction writings about tarantulas and scorpi- ons, and what he found out about them through researching their lifestyles and habits. The students were really engaged in his presentation due to his enthusiasm about his book topics, and also because of all the “gross” spider and scorpion pictures that accompa- nied his talk. They especially enjoyed the surprise ending of his presentation that wrapped up his lecture. Storad is an award-winning author

of more than 30 science and nature books for children and young adults, including Don’t Call Me Pig!

(A Javelina Story), Rattlesnake Rules, Desert Night Shift, Life in the Slow Lane, Lizards for Lunch and Don’t Ever Cross That Road! Storad also has authored a series of books written for readers in second through fourth grade.

welcomed more than 200 elementary school children (ages preschool to fourth grade) for the 10th anniversary of the annual Smiles of Christmas event. The event took place Dec. 1 on the school’s campus and adjoining Monterey Park, 2525 N. 3rd St. Smiles of Christmas, during which

Younger children are paired with high school mentors, is the largest student- led mentor charity event in the south- west. It was founded by Saint Mary’s graduate Tom Medrano, who has been involved since its inception. This year, more than 150 Saint

Mary’s students participated, along with an additional 100 visiting high school volunteers from Seton, Notre Dame, Basha and Cesar Chavez high schools. Each teen presented their “buddy” with a stocking filled with goodies, and then they all headed to the park to play. The event included a skit, carnival

games, crafts, bounce houses, a photo booth, music and lunch provided by the Saint Mary’s community. Children also enjoyed a visit with Santa.
