VIEWPOINTS to the Editor Letters

Letters to the Editor do not necessarily reflect the views of the Freestone County Times

Dear Editor, I would like to personally

thank all the merchants in Fairfield for their generous contributions in making it possible to have “Christmas Expressions” at Fairfield Nursing & Rehab celebrating the birth of our Dear Lord and Savior, Jesus on December 15th. I want to thank the most talented and gifted singers and so many professional

band members for making everything possible and successful. Thank you for your God given talents. Band members included

gifted musicians Don Willard at keyboard, Craig Covey – fiddle and led guitar, Bruce at the Steel Guitar and Dusty at the Bass Guitar. I want to thank all the wonderful singers: Miss Mary Vaughn of Teague; Lauren Covey of Fairfield, Rosalie and Charles Matthews – The Original Gospel Wonder; and Linda Burts from Emmanuel Baptist in Fairfield. I would also like to personally thank everyone involved for the time and effort they gave to make this possible. Hopefully, we will be able to choose yet another rest home for the event next year. Remember, caring is

sharing.

Politics and Politicians

Dear Editor, As has been the case for

the past few decades, the vast majority of professional politicians believe that the citizens of America do not deserve a chance at self- government. It is suggested that we genuinely do. What we experience and participate in today is no longer reflective of a fully self-governing society. With small to medium sized protests occurring across America, and in Europe where some violence has taken place, it is obviously the right time to recognize that our governmental branches need to evolve to a level in which the government supports the direction that our particular

society (and along with a few others around the globe as well) wants to go, versus tolerating an over-reaching national government that insists on being in control of the general populace one- hundred percent of the time. Another great challenge for

us today is not what we can do for our country, but rather what we can do for ourselves and our communities that will lessen or eliminate the societal damage that is presently being caused by

4 5 6 7 Two recent stories in the news

offer a perfect illustration of why the best vehicle for harnessing abundant and reliable energy is the free market, rather than government planning. First is the fiasco surrounding the

solar panel manufacturer Solyndra. A year ago, Solyndra was singled out by the Obama Administration as an example of how innovative companies would lead to a clean energy revolution. During a visit to the company’s

plant in Fremont, California in May 2010, President Obama declared that “companies like Solyndra are leading the way toward a brighter and more prosperous future.” The Obama Administration was so enthralled that it extended Solyndra more than half a billion dollars in loan guarantees. Today Solyndra is bankrupt, and

the taxpayers are on the hook for as much as $535 million. What went wrong? In theory,

solar power sounds great. Sunlight is free, and the prospect of clean, abundant energy from solar panels is enough to fill one with a warm glow almost as bright as the sun itself. The problem is that constructing

the solar panels themselves is incredibly expensive, especially when American companies compete with lower labor costs from China. The capital costs associated with solar power makes its electricity about four times as expensive as that generated from fossil fuels. The only thing keeping the

industry afloat is massive government subsidies, and Solyndra shows sometimes even that isn’t enough. Internal emails from the

Department of Energy show government officials were concerned about Solyndra’s viability before the loans were even approved. Yet these concerns were ignored in favor of political considerations. Meanwhile, the real advances in

cheap energy have been coming not from the sky but from under our feet. With the emergence of in

technological advances

directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing, a sort of renaissance has taken place in the oil and gas industry. In the past year, the federal Energy Information Association has doubled its estimates of producible natural gas in the United States. Texas, in particular, has benefited

from these technologies. From 2010 to 2011, the U.S. Energy

high-level politicians and mid-level bureaucrats that are largely unseen. We need to consider a

new method of thinking and comprehension , which will in turn increase our awareness of Wisdom and how it can provide inspiration for ourselves, our great country, and last but not least, all of humanity.
