150th Anniversary

Just like many of our visitors, we have been planning for our official 150th Anniversary for many years. As 2013 approaches all of the details are being finalized. While you do not need to visit in July or November of 2013 to honor our history or to experience the American Civil War in Gettysburg, we will offer a tribute to those who were part of the Battle of Gettysburg and the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery. Special preservation and conservation efforts are being made to prepare our community for our commemoration and for the future of Gettysburg. We encourage you to visit often and be part of the many opportunities to learn, engage, inspire and honor our history.

In 2013, the Gettysburg National Military Park plans to hold an evening program on June 30 to begin its five day commemoration highlighting the heroic acts of July 1-3, 1863. On July 1, Gettysburg’s Seminary Ridge Museum will celebrate its grand opening. July 3, take in special tours, living history and presentations during the annual Battle of Hunterstown Commemoration.

From July 4-7, watch as the Battle of Gettysburg is replayed by thousands of Civil War reenactors. July 6, experience the only in-town reenactment as Confederates take the Shriver House. During this full week of activities, discover living history encampment, seminars, musical performances and author/artists signings.

Return in November to remember the solemn days of the aftermath and the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery. Remember the very words spoken by President Abraham Lincoln during his powerful Gettysburg Address. Experience the hope and healing that lingered and spread out from Gettysburg on that fine, fall day.

It is with respect and honor that we commemorate the Battle of Gettysburg, the Dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery and the delivery of the Gettysburg Address. We invite you to be part of the commemoration in 2013 and throughout the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War.
