Enter the Haggis Invites You on Tour

| by Dwayne Hoover S 34 | REVUEWM.COM | JANUARY 2012

INCE 1 9 9 6 , TORONTO- BASED Enter the Haggis has been sharing its Indie/Celtic/Folk Rock with the world, and most recently with the October 2011 release of its

latest album, Whitelake. “Whitelake is probably the

most ‘naturally occurring’ of our albums to date, in that it was influenced – but not coerced – by the conditions around it,” said Craig Downie, multi-instrumentalist for the band. “In previous albums we used to say, ‘There isn’t enough fiddle or bagpipe,’ or ‘We need to keep a Celtic element’ in every piece. We didn’t worry about that this time around, and as a consequence, the experience was pretty refreshing and experimental.” Even Bruce McCarthy, who replaced

James Campbell as drummer in the latter part of 2010, was embracing the experimental vibe. “During the recording of Whitelake, it was

a riot watching Bruce experiment with any- thing he could find laying around in order to get unique and creative textures. For example, I believe he used a serving tray in place of a snare for one track and a giant marching band

bass drum as a kick drum for another,” said Bassist Mark Abraham. In addition to rolling out albums –

Whitelake is the band’s ninth – ETH is known for its aggressive touring schedule. It appears as though 2012 looks to be no dif- ferent, with shows planned for the United States, Canada and Europe. According to Abraham, the band has turned it down a notch. “We do tour a lot, though

have slowed down a little bit in the last couple years as several of us have growing families at home – by slowing down I mean

maybe down to 150 dates a year as opposed to 250, so still quite busy.” Even die-hard ETH fans (or “Haggis

Heads”) have the opportunity to actually share in the band’s touring experience. In fact, ETH’s fourth tour to Ireland this April will be one that fans are actually invited to join. “We work with a travel agency in NY who

takes care of all the details to make a complete package that includes airfare, hotel, tour bus/ guide, a few of the meals and VIP access to all our shows,” Abraham said. Complete details and sign up information are available on the band’s website. n
