staaRs seeks to add reality to energy and resource debates Ohio’s Source for Ag Information
ByMatt Reese With complex issues such as indirect
land use change, increasing regulatory efforts in watersheds and the ongoing debate about energy and biofuels, it often seems there is little factual information to help make sound policy decisions. The numbers being used to make important decisions on U.S. farms are too often aver- ages of statistical guesses of a simulated reality of what is actually happening in farm fields. And all too often, the result is ineffective (and potentially harmful) public policy based on a statistical best guess. The challenge, of course, is the lack of
real time, relevant data. The United Soybean Board, in coopera-
tion with six state soybean organizations, including the Ohio Soybean Council (OSC), decided to do something to address the lack of reality in these numbers. With the hope of maintaining freedom to oper- ate in an environment of limited govern- ment regulations, the Iowa Soybean Association spearheaded the Strategies Targeting American Agricultural Resources and Sustainability (STAARS) initiative. The data will provide transparency into the realities of farming to policymakers and the public, along with practical on-farm benefits for the farms involved.
In an effort to maintain a social license that includes freedom to operate, the Iowa Soybean Association is leading a national charge to compile real data from farms around the country, including Ohio, to use for making policy decisions.
