New Philips lighting solution increases duration of sleep for hospital patients.

Comfort for patients in hospital is of paramount importance, and Philips has created a new HealWell lighting system in order to help create an ideal lighting solution for hospital spaces. The Philips HealWell is a lighting system that can be installed in a hospital patient room. HealWell produces lighting levels that change gradually throughout the course of the day, much like the changes in light outdoors on a sunny day, which affects sleep and mood. Creating a healing environment in order to make the patients' stay more enjoyable is becoming an increasingly important way for healthcare institutions to promote recovery. Philips carried out research in partnership with The Maastricht University Medical Center+ (Maastricht UMC+) to investigate the effect of light on the sleep-wake rhythm of cardiac patients. The research shows that after seven days in a patient room fitted

with HealWell patients sleep on average 8% longer, because the system mimics the natural day/night cycle outdoors. After one week in a patient room fitted with standard lighting on the other hand, patients' sleep duration was in fact slightly shorter than on the first night.

High levels of light during the day helps to

regulate the human biological clock and sleep-wake rhythm. If a person’s bio-rhythm is unbalanced then this can disrupt sleep, which can cause a number of problems. Philips HealWell combines the positive biological effects of natural daylight with a pleasant atmosphere in the patient room. This has a positive effect on the patient's sleep patterns and that in turn has a positive effect on their biorhythm, which is important for their health and well-being. The system also allows patients to create their own ideal light levels, and enables caregivers to create an optimum light

scheme to work in. The research carried out by Philips and The Maastricht UMC+ has found that the time it takes patients to fall asleep using the HealWell system has improved by 30% between the first and seventh night, meaning that patients sleep around 30 minutes longer, an important amount of time for patients during the healing process. The research carried out also stated that patients enjoyed having the freedom to select their own light settings, and carers are pleased that the lighting is properly distributed across a patient’s bed without causing shadows, as this can improve their ability to work.
