suffered from regular lamp failure and Planned Lighting were asked to devise a new scheme that would offer energy saving lamps with good colour rendition and a longer lamp life, whilst reducing maintenance costs. Megaman’s AR111 LED lamps offered a


direct replacement for the halogen spots situated on the sales floor, and provide a perfect illumination to highlight the merchandise in the store. Offering the same light intensity and colour temperature, the AR111’s also provide energy saving of up to 80%, therefore considerably improving the stores energy saving practices.


The benefits that LEDs have to offer also extend to ease of use; “Perhaps the most compelling reason for using LEDs lamps is the flexibility they offer. Colours, colour temperature and brightness are all easily controlled to create environments that can be adapted to the time of year, time of day and the products on display,” explains Gerrit-Willem Prins of LED Engin. “Bright, crisp, cool light is ideal for displaying diamonds, for example. welcoming light may be more appropriate in a soft-furnishings area of a store. The aim is to optimise the mood of consumers, allow them to feel at ease, and persuade them to buy”. Frequently, in order to appropriately light a chosen product, a focused beam of light is needed. This can be difficult to achieve with some LEDs because the light from an LED chip is transmitted equally in all directions. “The solution is to specify LED lamps that use a single emitter and TIR lens,” explains Prins. “This type of plastic lens, when used with a compact, very bright, single LED emitter, enables lamps to be produced that, for a given power consumption and overall light output, focus twice as much of the light in the centre of the beam.” Although LED lighting


is a real benefit to retailers, it is important that the correct light fittings are specified in order to maximise efficiency and minimise wasted light and glare. Jeanine Chrobak-Kando, Business Development Manager of LED EUMEA at Verbatim agrees that LED lighting can offer a number of added bonuses to retailers; “For grocery stores where LEDs are particularly suited to illuminate heat sensitive objects such as food, they can light vegetables differently from meat – enhancing the appeal of both. For luxury fashion stores, LED lighting using sensors or motion control can bring drama to a clothing collection, accent particular shelves and precise spotlights on railed garments to capture customers’ attention as well as provide feel-good hues in fitting rooms.” Therefore, the lighting can be used to create a mood in which customers will be most likely to make purchases. Chrobak-Kando also believes that the future spells an increase in organic LED products (OLEDs). “Retailers will benefit from the ability to emit dimmable and colour-tunable light across entire surfaces
